Heavy-Duty Industrial Mill Fire Hose — Wash-Down, Discharge & Mining Service
CA-FIRE mill hose is the economic workhorse for industrial water discharge, plant wash-down, construction-pump operations, mine dewatering and cable / sling protection. A single or double jacket of high-tenacity polyester filament bonded to a Nitrile (NR), SBR or CR rubber lining produces a durable, mildew-resistant hose that withstands the abrasion of factory floors, gravel construction sites and underground mine workings.
Available in two construction grades: Mill-NS single-jacket at 120–150 psi service pressure for general wash-down and economy applications, and Mill-ND double-jacket at 300–400 psi for heavier-duty pump discharge and mining service. Sizes from 1½" to 6". MSHA-approved variants available for underground mining use.
What Is Industrial Mill Fire Hose?
A mill hose — also called mill discharge hose, industrial fire hose, wash-down hose, or contractor hose — is a heavy-duty woven-jacket hose with a synthetic rubber lining, designed for industrial water discharge, equipment wash-down, construction pumping, and similar service. The construction is similar to a single-jacket cabinet fire hose, but uses thicker-wall Nitrile (NR), SBR or CR rubber linings and is optimized for sustained low-to-medium-pressure operations in harsh industrial environments rather than for high-pressure structural fire attack.
The defining advantages: extreme durability on rough surfaces (foundry floors, steel-mill catwalks, gravel construction sites, mine workings), chemical resistance (the Nitrile rubber lining tolerates oils, fuels, mild acids, alkalis and most industrial process fluids), mildew resistance (synthetic polyester jacket plus rubber lining), and economical pricing (a fraction of UL/FM-listed attack hose). Mill hose is the right specification when you need a tough, reliable industrial discharge hose without paying for fire-brigade certification.
⚠ Important — Mill hose is not a fire attack hose. Mill hose is designed for open-end discharge, wash-down, dewatering and industrial pumping at moderate pressure. It is not tested or rated for high-pressure structural firefighting at the nozzle. For municipal brigade and structural fire attack at 400 psi service pressure, specify Attack Fire Hose or Double-Jacket Fire Hose. For NFPA-compliant occupant-use cabinet installations, specify Single-Jacket Fire Hose.
Two Construction Grades — Choose by Service Pressure
CA-FIRE produces mill hose in two construction grades. Pick the grade based on the service pressure your application needs and the abrasion conditions the hose will see.

Common Use Cases
Steel Mill & Foundry Wash-Down
1½"–3" single-jacket mill hose for slag removal, equipment wash-down and floor flushing in steel mills, aluminum smelters and foundries. Nitrile or CR lining tolerates the heat and oily process water.
Construction Site Dewatering
2"–4" Mill-NS for trench dewatering, foundation drainage, and water diversion around active construction. Lower cost than rubber-covered LDH, adequate for the moderate pressures construction pumps deliver.
Underground Coal Mine Service
1½" MSHA-approved single-jacket hose for underground coal mine operations. Vulcanized lining prevents delamination, flame-resistant materials per MSHA 30 CFR Part 18 Section 18.65 requirements.
Quarry & Surface Mine Dewatering
3"–6" Mill-ND double-jacket for surface-mining and quarry dewatering at 300–400 psi pump discharge pressure. Heavier wall withstands abrasion from coarse sediment and rocky terrain.
Power Plant & Refinery Wash-Down
Mill hose with CR (chloroprene) lining for oil-bearing wash-down water in refineries, power plants and chemical processing facilities. Resists the petroleum products that destroy NR/SBR linings.
Cable Protection / Sling Protection
Empty mill hose slid over electrical cables, rigging slings or hydraulic lines to protect them from cuts, abrasion and chafing. The double-jacket version is the workhorse of cable-cover service.
Agricultural & Crop Irrigation Backup
2"–4" mill hose as economical pump-discharge line for crop irrigation, pond draining, agricultural transfers. Significantly more durable than thin-wall layflat for repeated agricultural use.
Dust Suppression & Spray Operations
3"–6" for dust-suppression water spraying at mines, quarries, construction sites and demolition sites. Pump-fed open-end discharge — the textbook mill-hose application.
Color & Coupling Options
Standard color is white. Custom colors are available for color-coded systems or department branding — popular alternatives are yellow for high-visibility construction use, blue for water service, and red for fire-protection installations. Couplings are typically threaded aluminum or brass NH/NST/NPSH, Camlock for industrial water transfer, or rocker-lug expansion-ring for MSHA mining hose.

What is the difference between mill hose and fire hose?
Fire hose (specifically attack hose and standpipe hose) is engineered for high-pressure handline service at the nozzle — pressurized water flow to extinguish a fire. It is third-party listed (UL, FM) and certified to NFPA 1961.
Mill hose is engineered for industrial water discharge, wash-down, pumping and similar service at moderate pressure with an open end (no nozzle restriction). It uses thicker, more abrasion-resistant rubber lining than fire hose but is not certified for fire-attack service.
Use mill hose for: wash-down, dewatering, pump discharge, mining service, dust suppression, cable cover. Use attack fire hose for: structural firefighting at a nozzle.
Can mill hose be used as fire hose?
Generally no. Mill hose is not third-party listed for fire-fighting service and is not designed for the high pressures and rapid pressurization cycles encountered at a fire-attack nozzle. Using mill hose for structural fire attack would be off-label use that voids product warranty and may not meet the requirements of your local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction).
The one exception is the MSHA-approved variant in underground coal mines, which serves as both a wash-down hose and an emergency fire-suppression hose under MSHA 30 CFR Part 18 — but this is a specialized mining use, not general structural firefighting. For NFPA-compliant fire service, specify attack hose or UL-listed single-jacket fire hose instead.
What is the difference between Mill-NS and Mill-ND?
Mill-NS is the single-jacket version — one layer of polyester jacket bonded to the rubber lining. Service pressure 120–150 psi. The most economical choice for general wash-down and light discharge applications. Most widely used.
Mill-ND is the double-jacket version — two layers of polyester jacket for substantially better abrasion resistance and higher service pressure (300–400 psi). Recommended for mining, construction pumps at higher pressures, and any application where the hose will be dragged across rough surfaces.
Rule of thumb: order Mill-NS for surface-level wash-down and discharge work. Order Mill-ND for underground mining, pump-discharge above 150 psi, or rough-terrain applications.
Is mill hose MSHA approved?
Yes. CA-FIRE mill hose is available in MSHA-approved variants for underground mining service. The MSHA-approved construction meets the requirements of MSHA 30 CFR Part 18 Section 18.65 for flame-resistant fire hose used in underground coal mines. The rubber lining is vulcanized to the polyester jacket to prevent delamination, and the materials are engineered to prevent caustic emissions when exposed to fire.
Standard MSHA mill hose is 1½" × 50 ft with internal expansion ring threaded aluminum couplings (NH/NST or NPSH/IPT). Custom sizes available on request.
What lining material should I choose — NR, SBR or CR?
NR (Natural Rubber / Nitrile blend) is the default for general water service. Good abrasion resistance, moderate chemical resistance, economical.
SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) is the lowest-cost lining. Adequate for non-aggressive water wash-down at moderate temperatures. Choose for high-volume economy applications.
CR (Chloroprene / Neoprene) is the right choice when the hose will see oil, fuel, mild chemicals or higher temperatures. Used in refineries, power plants and chemical processing facilities. Higher cost but substantially longer service life in those environments.
Can mill hose be packed wet?
Yes. Mill hose uses synthetic polyester jacket and rubber lining — both materials are immune to mildew and rot, so the hose can be coiled or rolled wet without damage. This is one of the practical advantages over jacketed fire hose, which traditionally must be dried between uses to prevent jacket rot.
Still, for maximum service life and to remove abrasive contaminants, a quick rinse with clean water after exposure to chemicals, oil or aggressive process water is recommended.
What coupling fits industrial mill hose?
The most common coupling for U.S. mill-hose service is NH/NST threaded with rocker-lug or NPSH/IPT threaded with rocker-lug — in aluminum (standard) or brass. For industrial water-transfer applications, Camlock (cam & groove) couplings are standard. For European markets we supply Storz, BS 336, GOST or Guillemin threads on request.
MSHA mining hose uses internal-expansion-ring threaded aluminum couplings specifically engineered for the wet, dirty mine environment. Specify when ordering.
