How to Read the CA-FIRE Model Code

T / W / X
Operation type: Tiller · Wheel/gear · eXplosion-proof remote
S / A
S = stainless steel + brass nozzle · A = aluminium alloy nozzle
F / Z / P-Q
F = stream + fog · Z = straight stream · P/Q = foam-water
020–080
Flow indicator: 020 ≈ 1,200 LPM · 040 ≈ 2,400 LPM · 080 ≈ 4,800 LPM

Fire Monitor Selection Guide — Choose by Operation Type

Fire Monitor Type Series Operation Flow Range Reach Medium Best For
Manual Tiller Fire Monitor TFS Tiller (Handle) 1,200–4,800 LPM 50–85 m Water / Foam Attended positions, emergency response

Automatic Positioning Fire Monitor Auto Auto-Targeting Custom Custom Water / Foam Large-space & high-bay auto-suppression
What flow rate do I need?
Flow rate is set by the hazard and the protected area. As a guide: small process units and warehouses often use 1,200–2,400 LPM; large tank farms, petrochemical units and high-bay spaces typically need 3,000–4,800 LPM. Match flow to the design density required by your standard (NFPA 15 / GB 50338), then choose the model that delivers it at 8 bar.
Manual, gear or remote control?
Use TFS tiller for fast manual aiming at attended positions; WFS gear for high-flow discharge where the nozzle must hold aim under reaction force; XFS remote where personnel cannot be present (tunnels, tank farms); and automatic positioning for detection-linked, unmanned suppression of large spaces.
Water only, or water and foam?
Choose water-only for Class A fires (solids, general industrial). Choose a foam-water (SP/SQ) model for Class B fires — flammable liquids such as petroleum, solvents and fuels — where a foam blanket is needed to suppress the burning surface. Foam models are available across all three operation types.
Which nozzle pattern?
Specify straight stream + fog (the .F models) for flexibility between maximum reach and a protective fog screen; straight stream (.Z) for pure distance; or stacked tips (Z-4) for maximum throw. Stainless steel + brass (S) nozzles suit corrosive and marine sites; aluminium alloy (A) reduces weight.
What is a fire monitor?
A fire monitor is a fixed or mobile fire-fighting nozzle that delivers a high-flow, long-range jet of water or foam onto a fire from a distance. It is mounted on a base or riser and aimed by hand, by gear, or by electric remote control. CA-FIRE fire monitors deliver 1,200–4,800 LPM with a reach of up to 85 m at 8 bar working pressure.
What is the difference between TFS, WFS and XFS series?
The first letter of the model code is the operation type: TFS = tiller (manual handle), WFS = wheel (gear / hand wheel), XFS = explosion-proof electric remote control. All three share the same SS304/SS316 body and the same 1,200–4,800 LPM flow range — they differ only in how the monitor is aimed and operated.
What flow rate and reach can CA-FIRE fire monitors deliver?
Flow ranges from 1,200 LPM (reach 50 m) up to 4,800 LPM (reach 85 m), all at 8 bar working pressure. Foam-water models cover 1,440–3,840 LPM with a water reach up to 75 m and a foam reach up to 70 m. The exact flow and reach for each model is listed in the specification table on each product page.
Can the fire monitor discharge foam as well as water?
Yes. The SP and SQ foam-water models are available across all three operation types (tiller, gear and remote). They use an air-aspirating foam nozzle for Class B fires — flammable liquids such as petroleum and solvents — and require an upstream foam proportioner and concentrate supply. Water-only models are also available for Class A fires.
Are the remote control fire monitors explosion-proof?
Yes. The XFS series is an explosion-proof electric remote control fire monitor, suitable for hazardous-area installations such as petroleum tank farms, LNG terminals, tunnels and offshore platforms. It is operated by wireless transmitter, wired control box or manual hand wheel, with a travelling angle of 340° horizontal and −45° to +85° vertical. Power supply is AC 220V with a 24V motor actuator.
What body material and flange standards are used?
Every CA-FIRE fire monitor body is stainless steel SS304 or SS316, with a stainless steel + brass or aluminium alloy nozzle. Flange standards available are BS4504, ANSI 150 and GB, with inlet sizes of 2.5", 3" and 4" depending on the flow rate. Specify your required flange standard and inlet size at the time of order.
What is an automatic positioning fire monitor?
An automatic positioning fire monitor detects, locates and targets a fire automatically using integrated flame detection, then links to the fire alarm system for fully automatic suppression without any human input. It is used for large-space and high-bay protection — warehouses, atriums and exhibition halls — where a fire could start anywhere across a wide area.
Can CA-FIRE supply custom configurations and OEM?
Yes. As a direct manufacturer, CA-FIRE supplies custom flow rates, nozzle configurations, flange standards and finishes, as well as OEM and private-label production. Send your required flow rate, operation type, medium (water or foam) and application, and CA-FIRE will confirm the exact model and quotation.
