How to Choose the Right Fire Hose
Selecting a fire hose comes down to three decisions — what is the hose for, what diameter is required, and which lining material fits the environment. Use the guide below to narrow the choice, then click through to the matching product page for full specifications.
By Application
- Municipal & brigade attack — double-jacket or attack hose, 1¾"–2½", EPDM or TPU lining, 400 psi service rating.
- Hydrant supply / LDH — fire hydrant hose or rubber-covered hose, 4"–6", pre-coupled Storz or NST.
- Wildland / forestry — forestry hose, 1" or 1½", lightweight TPU lining, EN 694 certified.
- Marine & offshore — marine fire hose, CCS / MED approved, salt-water and ozone stable.
- Industrial wash-down / mill — mill hose, 150 psi economy nitrile / SBR construction.
- Cabinet / rack / occupant use — single-jacket hose, lightweight, easy to deploy.
- Water transfer / dewatering — layflat hose, TPR or TPU, compact storage.
- Drafting from static sources — hard suction hose, helix-reinforced, vacuum rated.
By Size (Internal Diameter)
- 1" (25 mm) — wildland backpack hose, garden / booster line.
- 1½" (38 mm) — cabinet hose, occupant-use, light attack handline.
- 1¾" (45 mm) — modern preferred attack size in many fire services.
- 2" (50 mm) — high-flow attack, industrial standpipe.
- 2½" (65 mm) — workhorse supply & large handline, standard FDC connection.
- 3" (75 mm) — supply line, ship-to-shore.
- 4", 5", 6" (100/125/152 mm) — LDH (large diameter hose) for municipal hydrant supply & pumper-to-pumper.
By Lining Material
- EPDM rubber — best all-round: ozone, weather, hot-water resistant. Default choice for brigade hoses.
- TPU (polyurethane) — lightest weight, highest abrasion resistance, ideal for wildland & rack hose.
- TPR (thermoplastic rubber) — economical, good chemical resistance, popular for cabinet hose.
- Nitrile (NBR) — superior oil & fuel resistance, used in industrial and marine hoses.
- SBR / latex — economy industrial wash-down service.
- Hypalon-formulated rubber cover — outer protection on 4-layer LDH hose; UV & chemical proof.

Fire Hose FAQ
What is a fire hose made of?
A modern fire hose is built from two basic parts. The reinforcement jacket is woven from 100% high-tenacity polyester (or polyester + nylon) filament — this is the structural layer that holds pressure. The lining is a watertight rubber or thermoplastic tube bonded to the inside of the jacket. CA-FIRE manufactures linings in EPDM rubber, TPU, TPR, Nitrile and SBR — each material chosen for different applications. Rubber-covered LDH hoses add a third element: an external Hypalon-formulated rubber cover for UV and abrasion protection.
What is the difference between an attack hose and a supply hose?
An attack hose is the handline used to deliver water directly onto the fire. It is typically 1½", 1¾", 2" or 2½" in diameter and rated to 400 psi service pressure so firefighters can flow water with a nozzle pattern. A supply hose (also called LDH — large diameter hose) is the larger 4", 5" or 6" line used to move large volumes of water from a fire hydrant or pumper to the attack engine at lower pressure. Attack hoses are usually double-jacket; supply hoses are often rubber-covered LDH for abrasion resistance during long deployments.
What sizes do fire hoses come in?
CA-FIRE manufactures fire hoses from 1" (25 mm) up to 12" (306 mm) internal diameter. The most common sizes are 1½", 1¾", 2", 2½", 4" and 5". Standard lengths are 15 m (50 ft), 20 m (66 ft), 25 m (82 ft) and 30 m (100 ft) — custom lengths up to 100 m (330 ft) can be made to order. Couplings are pre-installed in your choice of Storz, NH, NST, NPSH, BS 336, GOST or Machino threads.
How long does a fire hose last?
With proper care, a quality fire hose can last 10 to 20 years. NFPA 1962 does not set a mandatory retirement age — instead it requires annual visual inspection, annual physical inspection, and a 5-year hydrostatic service test. A hose is retired when it fails any one of these tests, when the jacket shows abrasion damage exposing reinforcement, when the lining bubbles or separates, or when couplings can no longer be tightened to specification. Clean and dry the hose after every use to maximize service life.
Are CA-FIRE fire hoses NFPA / UL / FM certified?
Yes. CA-FIRE fire hoses carry the following approvals depending on product family: UL (Underwriters Laboratories), ULC, FM Global, NFPA 1961 (attack hose), NFPA 1963 (couplings), EN 14540 (European fire hose), EN 694 (forestry hose), BS 6391, CCS & MED (marine), MSHA (mining), NSF (potable water) and DIN 14811. Test certificates and submittal datasheets are provided with every shipment.
What is the difference between single-jacket and double-jacket fire hose?
Single-jacket hose has one woven polyester jacket bonded to the lining — lighter weight, lower cost, typically 150–300 psi service pressure. It is the standard hose for fire cabinets, rack systems, occupant-use installations and lower-pressure industrial service. Double-jacket hose adds a second outer jacket woven over the first, dramatically increasing abrasion resistance and raising service pressure to 250–400 psi. Double-jacket is the standard for municipal fire brigade attack hose and any application where the hose will be dragged across rough surfaces.
What coupling threads can CA-FIRE fit?
We pre-couple every hose with the thread you specify. Options include: Storz (Continental Europe, marine, LDH), NH / NST (USA national fire hose / national standard thread), NPSH (USA national pipe straight hose), BS 336 instantaneous (UK / Commonwealth), GOST (Russia & CIS), Machino (Japan / Southeast Asia), Guillemin / DSP (France) and Camlock (industrial). Brass or aluminum body. Sexless and self-locking Storz also available.
Can CA-FIRE produce OEM-branded fire hose?
Yes — OEM is one of our core services. We can print your brand name, logo, product code, certification marks and serial numbers along the length of the hose. Custom jacket colors, stripe patterns and lining specifications are available with reasonable minimum order quantities. Contact sales@ca-fire.com for OEM project requirements.
