Versatile Layflat Fire Hose for Water Transfer, Dewatering & Discharge
CA-FIRE layflat fire hose is the workhorse of low-pressure, high-volume water movement. An extruded thermoplastic tube — TPR, TPU, PVC or NBR depending on grade — bonded directly through a circular-woven polyester reinforcement jacket produces a hose that flattens for storage, deploys in seconds, packs tight on a reel, and stays flexible from sub-zero conditions through tropical heat.
Available in 1" to 12" internal diameter and lengths up to 200 m (660 ft) in a single continuous extrusion. NSF-approved TPU constructions are available for potable water transfer. The most popular configurations are 2", 3" and 4" TPR layflat for general water discharge, and 2½" – 6" TPU layflat for mining dewatering and heavy-duty industrial transfer.
What Is Layflat Fire Hose?
A layflat fire hose — also called a lay flat hose, flat fire hose, discharge hose, or water transfer hose — is a thermoplastic-extruded hose that lies completely flat when empty and pressurizes round when filled with water. The construction is fundamentally different from woven-jacket attack hose: where a fire attack hose uses a separate rubber lining bonded inside a woven polyester jacket, layflat hose extrudes the thermoplastic through the woven jacket in a single process, producing a unitized hose with the tube material on both the inside and the outside.
This construction is optimized for high-volume, low-to-medium-pressure water transfer rather than the high-pressure handline service of attack hose. The defining advantages: compact storage (flat-rolled or accordion-folded), fast deployment (no kink-clearing, no rolling needed), economical price per foot, wide diameter range (up to 12") and multiple material grades matched to specific service environments.
Layflat hose is used for water transfer, mining dewatering, irrigation supply, construction dewatering, emergency response, agricultural fertilizer transfer, bypass pumping, sludge handling, and any application where the hose moves water (or compatible fluid) at low to moderate pressure over distance. CA-FIRE supplies the full layflat range — choose the material grade that fits your application and we will deliver in your specified diameter, length and coupling configuration.
Four Material Grades — Match the Hose to Your Application
Layflat performance depends almost entirely on the tube material. CA-FIRE offers four grades, each optimized for different fluid, temperature and abrasion conditions. Choose the right one and the hose will outlast cheaper alternatives by 3–5×.

Why Choose Layflat Over Rigid Pipe or Jacketed Hose
For temporary, mobile or emergency water-transfer applications, layflat hose has decisive operational advantages over both rigid pipe and conventional jacketed fire hose.
Compact Storage
Empty hose lies completely flat — coils tightly on a reel or folds compact in a hose bag. A 100 m section of 4" layflat takes roughly 1/10 the storage volume of equivalent rigid pipe.
Fast Deployment
Roll out and pressurize. A trained two-person crew can deploy 300+ m of 4" layflat in under 5 minutes — versus hours of bolted-flange pipe assembly.
Lower Cost per Foot
Layflat hose costs a fraction of rigid pipe and is roughly 30–50% cheaper than equivalent woven-jacket attack hose for the same diameter and length.
Easy to Transport
Flat coils stack and ship efficiently. A standard 40' container holds far more layflat than equivalent rigid pipe — important for emergency deployment.
Wide Diameter Range
Available 1" through 12" in single seamless extrusions. One product family covers everything from garden-line transfer to large municipal bypass.
Multiple Material Grades
TPR, TPU, PVC and NBR variants match hose performance to fluid chemistry, temperature and abrasion conditions. Right hose, right price.
Common Use Cases
Mining Dewatering
4"–10" TPU layflat moves groundwater out of open-pit and underground mines. Abrasion-resistant TPU cover survives drag on coarse mine surfaces and sharp rock edges. Sometimes called "omniflex" or "mineflex" hose.
Agricultural Irrigation
2"–6" PVC or TPR layflat as temporary irrigation main lines, drip-feed supply and field-to-field water transfer. Quick to deploy, easy to relocate across cropping seasons.
Construction Dewatering
3"–8" layflat for trench and foundation dewatering, water diversion around active construction sites, and concrete-mixing water supply. TPR is the default; TPU for harsh sites.
Emergency & Disaster Response
Layflat hose deployed in flood-water diversion, post-disaster water supply to temporary sites, and emergency bypass when utility infrastructure is damaged. Stored compact, deployed fast.
Potable Water Transfer (NSF)
NSF-approved TPU layflat for temporary potable water transfer — disaster response, remote camps, military forward operating bases, festival and event water supply.
Fracking & Oilfield Water Transfer
4"–12" TPU layflat in long lays (200–400 m sections) for moving frac water from holding ponds to wellsite. UV-resistant, abrasion-resistant, packs onto reels for transport.
Bypass Pumping
Municipal sewer bypass, water-main shutdown bypass, and pump station maintenance. 6"–10" TPU layflat carries the flow while permanent infrastructure is offline.
Backup & Economy Fire Protection
Lower-pressure rural fire-protection systems, holiday and seasonal stand-by fire reserves, dust suppression at industrial sites. TPR layflat at 9-bar service is adequate and economical.
Color Options
Blue is the conventional layflat color (NSF potable-water hose is almost always blue), yellow for high-visibility construction and mining use, red for fire and emergency response, black for fracking and oilfield service. Custom branding can be printed along the hose length on TPU and PVC products; embossed on TPR and NBR.
Why Source Layflat Fire Hose from CA-FIRE
- Four material grades in stock. TPR (standard), TPU (premium), PVC (economy) and NBR (oil/fuel resistant). One supplier for the full layflat schedule — match the hose to your application instead of forcing a compromise.
- 1" to 12" diameter range. Smaller sizes for irrigation and backup fire reserves, larger sizes for mining dewatering and bypass pumping. Custom diameters available.
- Seamless lengths up to 200 m (400 m for TPU). Single continuous extrusion — no field-spliced joints to leak under pressure. Critical for fracking, mining and emergency-response applications.
- NSF-approved TPU available. Potable-water-rated TPU layflat for emergency drinking water transfer, remote camps and field operations.
- Through-the-weave extrusion. Tube material extruded through the polyester jacket creates a unitized hose without separate lining — no delamination, no glue lines, no failure between layers.

What is layflat fire hose used for?
Layflat fire hose is used for high-volume, low-to-medium-pressure water transfer and discharge. Common applications include mining dewatering, agricultural irrigation, construction dewatering, fracking and oilfield water transfer, municipal bypass pumping, disaster-response water supply, potable water transfer (NSF-approved TPU variants), and backup or economy fire-protection systems.
The hose is not designed for high-pressure structural fire attack — for that application use attack fire hose or double-jacket hose rated to 400 psi service.
What is the difference between TPR, TPU, PVC and NBR layflat hose?
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is the premium grade. Lightest weight, highest abrasion resistance, widest temperature range (−40 to +80 °C). NSF-approved variants available for potable water. Best for mining, fracking, potable water and demanding applications.
TPR (thermoplastic rubber) is the economic workhorse. Good flexibility, moderate abrasion resistance, working temperature −20 to +60 °C. Best for general water discharge, agricultural irrigation, light dewatering.
PVC is the lowest-cost option. Adequate for warm-climate irrigation, dust suppression and short-term applications above −10 °C (becomes stiff in cold weather). Best for irrigation and dust suppression in mild climates.
NBR (nitrile rubber) resists oil, fuel and petroleum products that destroy other layflat materials. Best for refineries, oilfields, and applications with hydrocarbon exposure.
What sizes does layflat hose come in?
CA-FIRE layflat hose is available from 1" to 12" (25 mm to 306 mm) internal diameter. Most popular sizes are 2" and 3" for irrigation; 4" for general water transfer; 4", 5", 6" and 8" for mining dewatering; 6" and 8" for municipal bypass; and 10" or 12" for the largest industrial-scale water transfer projects. Custom diameters can be made to order in TPU construction.
What is the maximum length of layflat hose you can supply?
Standard lengths are 15 m (50 ft), 20 m (66 ft), 30 m (100 ft), 60 m (197 ft), and 100 m (328 ft). For TPU constructions used in fracking, mining and emergency response, single seamless lengths of 200 m (660 ft) are standard and lengths up to 400 m (1,320 ft) can be produced to order. Longer continuous lengths reduce the number of field couplings (potential leak points) on long lays.
Can layflat hose be used for potable drinking water?
Yes — CA-FIRE NSF-approved TPU layflat hose is rated for potable water transfer. The TPU compound and the production process are certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 61 for drinking water contact. This is the right choice for disaster-response water supply, remote camp drinking water, military forward operating bases, and event water supply.
Standard TPR, PVC and NBR layflat hoses are not rated for potable water — specify TPU with NSF approval when ordering.
What couplings fit layflat hose?
Layflat hose typically uses Camlock couplings (the industrial standard for water transfer), Storz (firefighting / municipal), or Bauer (irrigation and agricultural). For smaller sizes (1"–2½"), we can install NH, NST, NPSH, BS 336, GOST or Guillemin couplings on request.
Couplings are pre-installed and pressure-tested before shipment. Bare-end supply is also available for customers who prefer to install couplings in the field.
What is the difference between layflat hose and attack fire hose?
The two products share a similar appearance but have fundamentally different construction and intended use.
Layflat hose uses an extruded thermoplastic tube and cover with reinforcement encapsulated in the middle — single integrated material throughout. Optimized for low-to-medium pressure water transfer (3–28 bar / 45–400 psi) at high volume over distance.
Attack fire hose uses a woven polyester jacket with a separately bonded synthetic rubber or TPU lining inside. Optimized for high pressure (400 psi service / 1,200 psi burst) handline operations at the fire nozzle.
If you need to spray water at a fire from a nozzle at 100+ psi, use attack hose. If you need to move water from point A to point B at moderate pressure, use layflat.
