XMDDG Extinguisher Cabinet Range

Complete Range of Fire Extinguisher Cabinets for Portable Extinguisher Stations

A fire extinguisher cabinet is the permanent wall-mounted enclosure that houses a portable fire extinguisher — the 5, 10 or 20 lb ABC dry powder or CO₂ cylinder that building occupants grab first to fight an incipient fire. Unlike hose cabinets, which connect to the building standpipe and require a trained response, extinguisher cabinets hold a self-contained unit that any occupant can operate in seconds. Every modern commercial building has them, placed at code-defined intervals along corridors and work areas.

CA-FIRE manufactures the XMDDG fire extinguisher cabinet range in three engineering variants — flush-mount recessed, weatherproof outdoor, and full stainless steel — each optimised for a specific installation environment. Four model sizes (XMDDG12 / 22 / 32 / 42) cover 5, 10 and 20 lb extinguisher capacities from all major manufacturers. Door options include tempered safety glass, clear acrylic break-front and solid steel. The cabinets are NFPA 10 compliant in layout and positioning, and supplied through factory-direct channels to 60+ export markets.

What Is a Fire Extinguisher Cabinet?

A fire extinguisher cabinet is a wall-mounted steel enclosure — typically red, typically 400 to 900 mm tall — that houses a portable fire extinguisher at a fixed location along a building corridor, work area or vehicle zone. In fire code language it is also called a fire extinguisher box, fire extinguisher housing or, occasionally, a fire extinguisher station. The cabinet itself is passive — it does not fight fires — but it is the visible, inspectable, standardised home of the extinguisher that actually does.

The cabinet performs four functions. It protects the extinguisher from dust, moisture, mechanical damage and tampering during the long periods between uses — typically years. It makes the extinguisher immediately locatable through standardised red colour, signage and code-defined placement intervals. It standardises the user interface — door handle, break-glass front, padlock hasp — so that occupants trained on one cabinet know how to open any cabinet in any building. And it supports code compliance by providing a permanent, fixed-location mounting that can be verified against NFPA 10 placement rules during inspection.

Fire extinguisher cabinets are specified in most modern fire codes including NFPA 10 (Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers) in the United States and many export markets, OSHA 1910.157 for workplace safety, and equivalent national standards. The specific cabinet type required depends on the installation environment — indoor vs outdoor, corrosive vs standard, and whether accessibility rules like ADA apply.

Three Fire Extinguisher Cabinet Variants

Pick by installation environment — indoor, outdoor or corrosive. All three variants share the same XMDDG model sizes and fit the same 5, 10 and 20 lb extinguishers, so the choice is about environment, not capacity.

Pick Your Cabinet by Extinguisher Capacity

Unlike hose cabinets — which are sized by NFPA standpipe class — extinguisher cabinets are sized around the portable extinguisher cylinder that lives inside. Start with the extinguisher weight rating in pounds or kilograms, then pick the matching XMDDG model number. The three size tiers cover almost every commercial portable extinguisher in service.

5 lb
XMDDG12
Fits 2.5 kg / 5 lb ABC dry powder or CO₂ extinguishers. Standard specification for offices, hotel guest rooms, small retail and residential corridors where a lightweight extinguisher is adequate.
10 lb
XMDDG22
Fits 4.5 kg / 10 lb ABC dry powder extinguishers. The most common model overall — the default for commercial corridors, hospitals, shopping malls, schools, airports and almost every mid-rise commercial application.
20 lb
XMDDG32 / 42
Fits 9 kg / 20 lb heavy-duty extinguishers. Used in industrial corridors, mechanical rooms, warehouses, parking garages, chemical plants and other high-hazard zones where a larger cylinder is required by code or risk assessment.

Dimension reference: XMDDG12 is 560 × 210 × 150 mm, XMDDG22 is 680 × 240 × 180 mm, XMDDG32 is 800 × 280 × 200 mm, XMDDG42 is 800 × 300 × 220 mm. Full specifications and rough-opening dimensions for recessed installations are on each individual product page. For a complete size breakdown across the range, see our fire extinguisher cabinet dimensions guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a fire extinguisher cabinet and a fire hose cabinet?

The two products serve different fire protection purposes. A fire extinguisher cabinet houses a self-contained portable extinguisher (5, 10 or 20 lb) that any occupant can grab and operate for an incipient fire. A fire hose cabinet houses a standpipe hose station (valve, hose, nozzle) connected to the building's fire-protection water supply for sustained fire attack. Extinguisher cabinets are smaller (typically 560–900 mm tall), placed at code-defined travel distances, and operated by one person without training. Hose cabinets are larger (800–2000 mm wide), placed at standpipe outlet locations, and operated by trained occupants or firefighters. Many buildings have both — extinguisher cabinets for first-response and hose cabinets for sustained attack. See our fire hose cabinet range for the hose station equivalent.

What size fire extinguisher cabinet do I need?

Match the cabinet model to the extinguisher capacity. For a 5 lb (2.5 kg) extinguisher, specify XMDDG12 — cabinet body 560 × 210 × 150 mm, suitable for offices and hotel guest rooms. For a 10 lb (4.5 kg) extinguisher — the most common commercial size — specify XMDDG22 at 680 × 240 × 180 mm. For a 20 lb (9 kg) heavy-duty extinguisher, specify XMDDG32 (800 × 280 × 200 mm, plain) or XMDDG42 (800 × 300 × 220 mm, with accessory space). Confirm the exact cylinder dimensions with your extinguisher supplier before ordering — different brands have slightly different physical dimensions within the same weight rating. Full dimensions are listed on each individual product page, and a comparative table is in our dimensions guide.

Which variant should I specify — recessed, outdoor or stainless?

Use the decision tree above. The shortest version: for standard indoor commercial corridors choose recessed flush-mount — it meets ADA projection rules and is the default indoor specification. For ordinary outdoor locations (gas stations, parking decks, construction sites) choose the outdoor weatherproof variant. For corrosive environments (food processing, pharma, marine, chemical) choose stainless steel — 304 grade for most, 316 grade for marine and chloride environments. Projects typically mix variants across different zones of the same building — there is no single "right" answer; the right answer depends on where each specific cabinet will live.

Does the cabinet come with a fire extinguisher included?

By default, no. Cabinets ship empty so that buyers can fit an extinguisher certified to local standards — UL in the United States, EN 3 in Europe, GB 4351 in China, AS/NZS 1841 in Australia, and so on. Extinguisher certification is market-specific and shipping hazmat units internationally is often more expensive and slower than sourcing them locally. That said, we can include a Chinese GB 4351 certified 5, 10 or 20 lb ABC or CO₂ extinguisher in the cabinet at quotation time if your project permits — this is common on projects destined for the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia where GB certification is accepted. Specify extinguisher requirements at quotation stage so we can confirm shipping logistics.

What door options are available — glass, acrylic or solid?

All three. Tempered safety glass door allows visual inspection of the extinguisher and tamper seal without opening — ideal for hotels, offices and public buildings where daily access is not expected but inspection efficiency matters. Clear acrylic break-front is designed to be shattered with a small mounted hammer in an emergency — fastest access, typical for schools, factories and public venues. Solid powder-coated or stainless steel door is the most durable option — specified for vandalism-prone locations and harsh outdoor environments. All three door types are available on the recessed, outdoor and stainless variants; mixing door types within a single project order is supported.

What standards do CA-FIRE fire extinguisher cabinets meet?

Our cabinets are designed to the principles of NFPA 10 (Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers), OSHA 1910.157 (workplace fire extinguisher requirements), and GB 4351 (the Chinese national portable extinguisher standard). Manufacturing is ISO 9001 certified and material certificates are provided with every order. The cabinet itself — unlike the extinguisher inside — is not usually subject to third-party performance certification in most jurisdictions; certifications apply to the portable extinguisher contents. If your project requires UL-listed cabinet hardware for federal or military specification, we can supply certified hardware at quotation time. Stainless variants come with material certificates (304 or 316 grade) for food-plant, pharma and marine audit documentation.

How much does a fire extinguisher cabinet cost?

Unit cost depends on variant, grade, size, door type, lock option, signage, quantity and destination. As a rough order of magnitude for factory-direct pricing from our Fujian facility: recessed painted cabinets are the most economical, outdoor weatherproof cabinets add a moderate premium, and stainless steel variants are 2–3× the cost of painted depending on grade (304 vs 316) and finish (brushed, mirror, electropolish). Volume discounts apply for project quantities above 50 units. Freight to international destinations adds 15–30% depending on distance. Email sales with your specification, quantity and destination and we respond within one business day with firm pricing — there is no online price list because pricing varies significantly by specification and by shipping destination.

How long does delivery take?

Typical production lead time is 15–25 days for standard painted variants and 25–40 days for stainless steel. Shipping from our Fujian factory to most international destinations is 20–40 days by sea freight, or 5–10 days by air freight for urgent orders. Total order-to-delivery is typically 5–9 weeks by sea and 3–5 weeks by air. For repeat customers and large framework projects we can hold stock of common XMDDG22 and XMDDG32 models to reduce lead time. Contact sales with your project timeline and we confirm realistic lead times as part of the quote response.
