Dimension 2 — By Body Material

Type 3: Cast Iron Body (Standard)

The default for indoor industrial installations. Grey cast iron with a baked epoxy anti-corrosion coating, painted RAL 3000 fire-engine red. Most cost-effective option for indoor mechanical rooms, data centres, archives, and any installation where corrosive conditions or marine atmosphere aren’t a concern. Type 5: Ductile Iron with Grooved Ends

A specialty variant in ductile iron (higher tensile strength than grey cast iron) with circumferentially-machined grooved end connections. The grooved end is dimensionally compatible with Victaulic, Anvil, and other AWWA C606-compliant couplings — replacing 8–12 flange bolts with a 2-bolt clamp coupling.

Dimension 3 — By End Connection (Pipework Method)

This dimension is decided by the project’s pipework method, not really a “type of deluge valve” so much as a matching choice to whatever your engineer has specified for the rest of the system.

Flanged ends (PN16 or ANSI Class 150/300) — the traditional connection method used for the vast majority of industrial firewater systems. Reliable, well-understood, supported by a global supply chain of pipe spools and gaskets. Flanged is the right choice when the upstream and downstream pipework is also flanged, when the working pressure is 2.5 MPa (no grooved option at that rating), or when the valve size is outside the DN80–DN200 range that grooved supports.

Grooved ends (Victaulic-compatible per AWWA C606) — increasingly common in commercial high-rise sprinkler systems and fast-track construction projects. Saves significant install time at every joint. Type 6: Standard Deluge Valve (Single-Trigger)

Can the same deluge valve serve different types of fire suppression systems?

Within reason, yes — the standard deluge valve mechanism is system-agnostic and can serve plain-water deluge, foam-water deluge, water-spray cooling, and water curtain applications without modification. The key constraints are the working pressure rating and the chemistry compatibility of the trim. EPDM diaphragm and brass/SS trim are compatible with plain water and AFFF/AR-AFFF foam concentrates at standard 3% or 6% concentrations. Why are some types only available in certain sizes?

Each variant has a sweet-spot size range driven by economics and engineering constraints. The grooved variant is DN80–DN200 because grooved couplings become impractically heavy and expensive above DN200, and uneconomical below DN80 (where the install-time savings don’t justify the engineering complexity).
