Fire Extinguisher Cabinet Dimensions Guide: Sizes by Capacity, Variant & Rough Opening

📐 10 min read  ·  📊 7 reference tables  ·  📅 Updated April 2026

TL;DR — Quick Reference

Fire extinguisher cabinets in the CA-FIRE XMDDG range are sized around the portable extinguisher that lives inside, not around cabinet-first dimensions. Four standard sizes cover the full commercial range: XMDDG12 (560 × 210 × 150 mm) for 5 lb extinguishers, XMDDG22 (680 × 240 × 180 mm) for 10 lb, XMDDG32 (800 × 280 × 200 mm) for 20 lb, and XMDDG42 (800 × 300 × 220 mm) for 20 lb with accessories.

The XMDDG22 — the 10 lb size — is the workhorse of the range and appears in about two out of three commercial installations. If you need a recessed (flush-mount) installation, add 20 mm to width and height for the rough opening in the wall, and ensure the wall cavity depth is at least 20 mm deeper than the cabinet body. This guide has the full size tables for all four sizes across three variants (recessed, outdoor, stainless), rough opening dimensions, wall compatibility, and metric/imperial conversions.

How to Pick a Size by Extinguisher Capacity

Extinguisher cabinets are sized differently from fire hose cabinets. A fire hose cabinet is sized by NFPA 14 standpipe class — Class I needs a certain cabinet, Class III needs another. An extinguisher cabinet, by contrast, is sized by the physical cylinder it houses. Start with the extinguisher weight in pounds (or kilograms), then pick the XMDDG model that fits that cylinder.

The three size tiers are:

XMDDG12 — 5 lb Size
560 × 210 × 150 mm

Fits 2.5 kg / 5 lb ABC dry powder or CO₂ extinguishers. The smallest XMDDG size. Standard specification for offices, hotel guest rooms, small retail and residential corridors where a lightweight unit is adequate.

XMDDG22 — 10 lb Size · MOST COMMON
680 × 240 × 180 mm

Fits 4.5 kg / 10 lb ABC dry powder extinguishers. The workhorse size of the entire range. Default for commercial corridors, hospitals, shopping malls, schools, airports and almost every mid-rise commercial application. If you are unsure which size to specify, it is almost always this one.

XMDDG32 — 20 lb Size
800 × 280 × 200 mm

Fits 9 kg / 20 lb heavy-duty extinguishers. Used in industrial corridors, mechanical rooms, warehouses, parking garages and other high-hazard zones where a larger cylinder is required by code or risk assessment. Plain configuration without accessory space.

XMDDG42 — 20 lb + Accessories
800 × 300 × 220 mm

Same 800 mm width as XMDDG32 but 20 mm taller and 20 mm deeper to make room for accessories — a secondary gauge panel, hose reel bracket, spare nozzle or escape mask. Specified in mechanical rooms and high-risk zones where the cabinet is expected to hold more than just the extinguisher.

Full XMDDG Dimensions Table

Complete dimensions in millimetres and inches for all four XMDDG sizes. These are the base painted indoor dimensions — variants (outdoor / stainless / recessed) use the same external body dimensions with minor adjustments noted further down.

Model Height (mm) Width (mm) Depth (mm) Imperial (H × W × D) Extinguisher Weight
XMDDG12 560 210 150 22.0″ × 8.3″ × 5.9″ 5 lb / 2.5 kg ~ 5 kg
XMDDG22 680 240 180 26.8″ × 9.4″ × 7.1″ 10 lb / 4.5 kg ~ 7 kg
XMDDG32 800 280 200 31.5″ × 11.0″ × 7.9″ 20 lb / 9 kg ~ 11 kg
XMDDG42 800 300 220 31.5″ × 11.8″ × 8.7″ 20 lb + accessories ~ 13 kg

Weights are approximate for a 1.0–1.2 mm cold-rolled carbon steel body without the extinguisher installed. Stainless steel variants (XMDDG-SS) are approximately 5–8% heavier; outdoor weatherproof variants (XMDDG-OD) are approximately 10–15% heavier because they use thicker 1.2–1.5 mm sheet steel to withstand outdoor impact and handling.

Rough Opening for Recessed Installations

For recessed flush-mount extinguisher cabinets, the rough opening in the wall framing is 20 mm wider and 20 mm taller than the cabinet body, giving installers shim room during seating. The factory-fitted trim ring covers any minor framing tolerance. All four XMDDG sizes are offered in the recessed configuration (unlike the hose cabinet range, where the smallest size is not offered recessed).

Model Cabinet Body (H × W × D) Rough Opening (H × W) Min Wall Depth Trim Ring Overlap
XMDDG12 560 × 210 × 150 580 × 230 170 mm 20–25 mm
XMDDG22 680 × 240 × 180 700 × 260 200 mm 20–25 mm
XMDDG32 800 × 280 × 200 820 × 300 220 mm 20–25 mm
XMDDG42 800 × 300 × 220 820 × 320 240 mm 20–25 mm

Notice the minimum wall depth increases with cabinet size — the XMDDG12 needs only 170 mm of wall cavity while the XMDDG42 needs 240 mm. This matters for drywall construction: a standard 100 mm metal stud wall (about 100 mm internal cavity) will not accept any XMDDG recessed cabinet. 150 mm stud walls accept the XMDDG12 with marginal clearance. 200 mm stud walls accept everything up to XMDDG42 comfortably. If you are unsure about your wall depth, see the compatibility table in Section 6.

Size Differences Between Variants

Unlike the SG24 fire hose cabinet range where all three variants (glass / stainless / recessed) share the same external body, the XMDDG extinguisher cabinet variants have small but real dimensional differences because they are engineered for different environments. The table below summarises which XMDDG sizes are available in each variant and any dimensional notes.

Variant XMDDG12 (5 lb) XMDDG22 (10 lb) XMDDG32 (20 lb) XMDDG42 (20 lb+)
Recessed (R) ✓ Yes ✓ Yes ✓ Yes ✓ Yes
Outdoor (OD) ✗ No ✓ Yes ✓ Yes ✓ Yes
Stainless (SS) ✗ No ✓ Yes ✓ Yes ✓ Yes

Why XMDDG12 is only offered as recessed

The 5 lb XMDDG12 is only made in the painted indoor and recessed configurations. It is not offered as an outdoor weatherproof variant because 5 lb extinguishers are almost never installed outdoors — outdoor code applications (gas stations, parking decks, construction sites) typically require a minimum 10 lb unit. It is also not offered as stainless steel because the facility types that demand stainless (food, pharma, marine, chemical) typically use 10 lb or 20 lb extinguishers for faster incipient-fire suppression in larger hazard areas.

Small dimensional differences between variants

The three variants share nominal external dimensions at any given size, but small differences exist:

  • Outdoor (OD) variants use 1.2–1.5 mm sheet steel (thicker than indoor 1.0–1.2 mm) which adds about 1 mm to the effective wall thickness on each side. Nominal dimensions are unchanged for specification purposes but the cabinet weight is 10–15% higher.
  • Stainless (SS) variants use 1.0–1.2 mm 304 or 316 stainless sheet, so dimensions match indoor painted exactly. The cabinet is about 5% heavier because stainless is slightly denser than carbon steel.
  • Recessed (R) variants omit the back plate (replaced by the wall itself) and add a factory trim ring. Total projection from the finished wall is only 20–25 mm (the trim ring) instead of the full body depth.

Internal Clearances — What Actually Fits Inside

External dimensions set the wall footprint; internal dimensions determine whether your extinguisher actually fits. The table below gives approximate internal clearances after accounting for the door frame, hinges, mounting brackets and interior signage. Use these numbers when confirming that a specific extinguisher brand and model will fit without binding on the door or hinge.

Model Internal Height Internal Width Internal Depth Typical Cylinder
XMDDG12 ~ 530 mm ~ 180 mm ~ 120 mm Ø 110 × H 420 mm (5 lb)
XMDDG22 ~ 650 mm ~ 210 mm ~ 150 mm Ø 150 × H 540 mm (10 lb)
XMDDG32 ~ 770 mm ~ 250 mm ~ 170 mm Ø 185 × H 640 mm (20 lb)
XMDDG42 ~ 770 mm ~ 270 mm ~ 190 mm Ø 185 × H 640 mm (20 lb) + accessory

Portable extinguisher cylinder diameters and heights vary slightly by manufacturer — a 10 lb ABC extinguisher from one brand might be Ø 150 × H 530 mm while another is Ø 160 × H 550 mm. The XMDDG22 is sized with enough margin to accept any standard 10 lb commercial extinguisher with at least 20–30 mm of clearance on all sides, but always verify with the specific cylinder datasheet before finalising your order. For unusual extinguisher geometries (long-hose accessories, side-mounted pressure gauges, or wheeled units) the XMDDG42 with its additional depth is the safer specification.

Wall Depth Requirements (Recessed Installations)

Because the XMDDG range spans four different cabinet depths (150 to 220 mm), wall compatibility depends on which size you are installing. The smallest XMDDG12 needs only 170 mm of wall cavity; the largest XMDDG42 needs 240 mm. The table below shows which wall types can accept which XMDDG sizes in the fully recessed configuration.

Wall Construction XMDDG12 (170) XMDDG22 (200) XMDDG32 (220) XMDDG42 (240)
Metal stud 100 mm + drywall ✗ No ✗ No ✗ No ✗ No
Metal stud 150 mm + drywall ✓ OK ⚠ Tight ✗ No ✗ No
Metal stud 200 mm + drywall ✓ OK ✓ OK ✓ OK ⚠ Tight
CMU block 150 mm ✓ OK ✗ No ✗ No ✗ No
CMU block 200 mm ✓ OK ✓ OK ✓ OK ⚠ Tight
CMU block 300 mm ✓ OK ✓ OK ✓ OK ✓ Ideal
Wood stud 2×6 (140 mm) ✓ OK ✗ No ✗ No ✗ No

The practical takeaway: 200 mm metal stud walls accept any XMDDG size up to and including the XMDDG42 (marginal), and 300 mm CMU block accepts everything comfortably. For thinner walls, pick a smaller XMDDG size or switch to surface-mount. If your project mixes different cabinet sizes across different wall types, you may need to specify different XMDDG models in different locations — for example, XMDDG22 recessed in drywall corridors and XMDDG32 surface-mount in shallow partition walls.

Metric / Imperial Conversion Reference

For projects specified in imperial units, the XMDDG dimensions convert to approximate round-ish imperial values. Use the table below when translating between the metric datasheet and an imperial drawing.

Metric (mm) Exact Inches Rounded Imperial Typical Use
150 mm 5.906″ 5-7/8″ (≈ 6″) XMDDG12 depth
180 mm 7.087″ 7-1/16″ (≈ 7″) XMDDG22 depth
210 mm 8.268″ 8-1/4″ XMDDG12 width
240 mm 9.449″ 9-1/2″ XMDDG22 width
280 / 300 mm 11.02 / 11.81″ 11″ / 11-3/4″ XMDDG32 / 42 width
560 mm 22.047″ 22″ XMDDG12 height
680 mm 26.772″ 26-3/4″ (≈ 27″) XMDDG22 height
800 mm 31.496″ 31-1/2″ XMDDG32 / 42 height

On a U.S. imperial drawing, it is common to round these values for readability — calling out an XMDDG22 as “27 inches × 9-1/2 × 7” on the drawing notes is fine. The manufactured dimension is still metric, so the spec text should reference the actual millimetre value as the authoritative number.

Extinguisher Brand Compatibility Notes

The XMDDG internal clearances are sized to accommodate any standard commercial portable extinguisher at the rated weight. Below are representative cylinder dimensions from the major global manufacturers — these numbers come from published datasheets and are for reference only; always confirm with the cylinder supplier before ordering.

Rating Typical Diameter Typical Height Matching XMDDG Clearance
2.5 lb ABC (1.1 kg) Ø 85–95 mm 350–400 mm XMDDG12 Generous
5 lb ABC (2.3 kg) Ø 105–115 mm 410–450 mm XMDDG12 Good
10 lb ABC (4.5 kg) Ø 145–160 mm 520–560 mm XMDDG22 Good
10 lb CO₂ Ø 140–150 mm 580–620 mm XMDDG22 Tight height
20 lb ABC (9 kg) Ø 175–195 mm 620–680 mm XMDDG32 Good
20 lb CO₂ / 30 lb ABC Ø 180–210 mm 650–720 mm XMDDG42 Generous

The 10 lb CO₂ row is worth highlighting: CO₂ cylinders are taller than equivalent-weight ABC powder cylinders because CO₂ is stored at higher pressure in a thicker-walled cylinder. A 10 lb CO₂ in an XMDDG22 fits, but with less vertical clearance than a 10 lb ABC — check the discharge horn position to confirm it clears the cabinet interior. For CO₂-heavy environments (commercial kitchens, electrical rooms, server rooms) the XMDDG32 with its 800 mm height is the more comfortable specification.

Custom Sizes and Special Orders

The four XMDDG standard sizes cover almost every commercial portable extinguisher installation. For projects outside the standard range, custom sizes are available to order. Typical reasons to go custom include:

  • Non-standard extinguisher geometry — very long hose accessories, side-mounted gauge panels, retrofitted monitoring sensors, or wheeled units that do not fit the standard wall-mount envelope.
  • Dual-extinguisher cabinets where a single cabinet must hold two extinguishers (one ABC and one CO₂, for example) at the same location — usually a wider custom width with a central divider.
  • Integrated signage or indicators such as illuminated LED signage, tamper sensors or alarm contacts that require additional internal space or external housing.
  • Heritage retrofits where an existing wall recess from a previous installation has a non-standard opening size and the new cabinet must fit the existing opening.
  • Architectural requests where the designer wants the cabinet proportioned to match wall panelling modules or visual alignment with adjacent elements.

Custom cabinets typically add 4–6 weeks to standard lead time. Minimum order quantities apply for non-standard dimensions — usually 10 units. Email sales with a drawing, target dimensions and the extinguisher specification, and we confirm feasibility and lead time within one business day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard size of a fire extinguisher cabinet?

There is no single “standard” size because the right cabinet depends on the extinguisher weight inside it. For the most common 10 lb commercial extinguisher, the standard cabinet is approximately 680 × 240 × 180 mm (roughly 27″ × 9.5″ × 7″). For 5 lb units the cabinet is smaller (560 × 210 × 150 mm); for 20 lb units the cabinet is larger (800 × 280 × 200 mm). The CA-FIRE XMDDG22 is the model number for the workhorse 10 lb size, which appears in about two out of three commercial installations.

What size cabinet do I need for a 10 lb fire extinguisher?

The XMDDG22, sized at 680 × 240 × 180 mm externally. Internal clearances of roughly 650 × 210 × 150 mm will accommodate any standard commercial 10 lb ABC dry powder extinguisher with about 20–30 mm of clearance on all sides. A 10 lb CO₂ cylinder also fits but more tightly on the height dimension because CO₂ cylinders are slightly taller than ABC powder cylinders of the same weight — verify with the cylinder datasheet before ordering.

What size cabinet do I need for a 5 lb or 20 lb fire extinguisher?

For 5 lb (2.5 kg) extinguishers, specify the XMDDG12 at 560 × 210 × 150 mm — typical for offices, hotel guest rooms and small retail. For 20 lb (9 kg) heavy-duty extinguishers, specify the XMDDG32 at 800 × 280 × 200 mm (plain configuration) or the XMDDG42 at 800 × 300 × 220 mm (with accessory space for a gauge panel, hose reel or monitoring sensor). If you have a non-standard 20 lb unit with extra accessories, XMDDG42 is the safer choice.

What are the rough opening dimensions for a recessed XMDDG cabinet?

Rough openings are 20 mm larger than the cabinet body in both height and width. XMDDG12 needs 580 × 230 mm; XMDDG22 needs 700 × 260 mm; XMDDG32 needs 820 × 300 mm; XMDDG42 needs 820 × 320 mm. Minimum wall cavity depth depends on the XMDDG model — 170 mm for the 12, 200 mm for the 22, 220 mm for the 32, and 240 mm for the 42. The factory-fitted trim ring overlaps the rough opening by 20–25 mm on all four sides, so minor framing tolerance is forgiving.

Can I recess an XMDDG cabinet into a standard drywall wall?

Only if the wall cavity is deep enough. A standard 100 mm metal stud wall has about 100 mm cavity depth — not enough for any XMDDG size. 150 mm stud walls accept the XMDDG12 (5 lb) comfortably and the XMDDG22 (10 lb) tightly. 200 mm stud walls accept all sizes up to XMDDG32 comfortably, with XMDDG42 marginal. CMU block walls of 200 mm or more are the most forgiving. If your project uses 100 mm partition walls, either use surface-mount cabinets or specify thicker studs at cabinet locations.

Will a UL-listed Amerex, Kidde or Buckeye 10 lb extinguisher fit the XMDDG22?

Yes. All major UL-listed commercial 10 lb ABC dry powder extinguishers from Amerex, Kidde, Buckeye, Ansul, Badger and other standard manufacturers fit the XMDDG22 internal clearance of approximately 650 × 210 × 150 mm. Typical 10 lb ABC cylinder dimensions are Ø 145–160 mm × H 520–560 mm, leaving 20–50 mm of clearance on all sides. Confirm with the specific cylinder datasheet if the extinguisher has unusual accessories like an extended hose, wall bracket or monitoring sensor.

Why is the 5 lb XMDDG12 only offered as a recessed or indoor painted cabinet?

Because 5 lb extinguishers are almost never installed outdoors or in corrosive environments. Outdoor applications (gas stations, parking decks, construction sites) typically require a minimum 10 lb unit by code or risk assessment. Corrosive environments (food processing, pharmaceutical, marine, chemical) typically use 10 lb or 20 lb extinguishers for faster incipient-fire suppression in larger hazard areas. The 5 lb size is an indoor-only product for offices, hotel guest rooms and small retail — which is why the XMDDG12 is only offered in painted indoor and recessed configurations.

Are CAD files and Revit families available for these XMDDG dimensions?

Yes. DWG CAD blocks (plan and elevation view) and Revit RFA family files for all four XMDDG sizes and all three variants are available for free download from our CAD & BIM download centre — no registration required. The Revit families include parameterised types so you can select the size directly from the Revit family browser, and dimensions propagate automatically to schedules and sections.
