Visual-Inspection Tempered Glass Fire Hose Cabinet

The CA-FIRE SG24 tempered glass fire hose cabinet is built around a single design principle: facility managers should be able to verify hose, valve and nozzle status without opening the cabinet door. A full-width 5 mm tempered safety glass front panel replaces the solid metal door of a conventional hose cabinet, making monthly visual inspections a ten-second walk-by instead of a tool-assisted door-opening routine. Over the life of a building with dozens of cabinets, this single feature dramatically reduces inspection labour.

Behind the glass, the cabinet body is powder-coated carbon steel with a standard NFPA-style internal layout โ€” angle valve mounted top-left or top-right, a hose rack or reel for Class II 1.5โ€ณ hose, nozzle holder, and optional portable extinguisher bracket for combined cabinets. The glass is toughened to EN 12150 / GB 15763.2 safety-glass standards so that if it ever breaks, it shatters into small blunt pieces rather than sharp shards, and it is held in an aluminium frame that prevents the pane from dropping out.

The SG24 series ships in four standard sizes from 800ร—650ร—240 mm to 1800ร—700ร—240 mm, covering Class II occupant-use hose stations through Class I and III fire-department connections. Custom sizes, branded signage and OEM finishes are available for project quantities. See our complete fire hose cabinet range for other variants, or read the fire hose cabinet dimensions guide for size selection.

Key Features & Benefits

Six features that separate the SG24 tempered glass series from conventional solid-door fire hose cabinets โ€” and why specifiers choose it for hotels, offices, hospitals and shopping malls where appearance and inspection efficiency both matter.

๐Ÿ”
At-a-Glance Inspection
The entire cabinet interior is visible through the glass panel. Facility teams can verify hose presence, valve position, nozzle condition and tamper seal from the corridor โ€” no keys, no tools, no door opening. Cuts monthly inspection time by up to 80%.
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ
Safety Tempered Glass
5 mm tempered safety glass to EN 12150 / GB 15763.2. Approximately 4ร— stronger than ordinary annealed glass and shatters into small blunt fragments rather than sharp shards. Holds up to daily corridor traffic, trolley bumps and accidental impacts.
๐Ÿ”ง
Individually Replaceable Glass
If the pane is ever damaged, only the glass needs replacement โ€” the cabinet body, hinge and frame remain in service. Replacement glass is stocked in all four sizes and ships on short lead time. Lower lifetime cost than solid-door cabinets that get scratched or dented.
๐ŸŽจ
Clean Architectural Finish
Red powder-coat body with brushed aluminium glass frame. Matches hotel and office interiors that reject the utilitarian look of plain red steel boxes. Signage is screen-printed or vinyl-applied directly to the glass so no stickers curl or peel.
๐Ÿšช
Emergency Access
Optional small break-glass hammer mounted beside the cabinet, or key-lock variant with keys stored in a nearby break-glass key holder. Equipment remains immediately available in an emergency while deterring theft and vandalism in public areas.
๐Ÿ“‹
NFPA-Style Layout Inside
Internal hardware arranged for Class I, II and III standpipe hose stations per NFPA 14 principles. Angle valve, hose rack, nozzle and extinguisher each have a fixed position โ€” consistent across every cabinet, which speeds up fire-department response and occupant training.

Installation Options

The SG24 tempered glass cabinet is available in three mounting configurations. Most projects use surface-mount for speed; architectural interiors use recessed for the flush finish.

Surface Mount

Cabinet sits on the finished wall surface, bolted through the back plate into masonry or structural studs. Fastest installation, no wall cutting, works on any wall type including poured concrete and CMU. Projects approximately 240 mm from the wall.

Default ยท Fastest Install

Semi-Recessed

Cabinet body sits partly inside the wall cavity with a trim ring covering the rough opening. Projects about 120 mm from the wall. Good compromise for walls that can take a 150 mm recess but not full cabinet depth.

Reduced Projection

Fully Recessed

Cabinet body sits entirely inside the wall cavity; only the glass front and trim ring are visible. Meets ADA accessible-route rules (projection โ‰ค 4โ€ณ). Requires framing at the design stage. See our recessed fire hose cabinet variant.

The Tempered Safety Glass at the Heart of the SG24

The single most important component of the SG24 cabinet is the glass โ€” and we do not cut corners on it. Every pane is toughened tempered safety glass manufactured to EN 12150 and GB 15763.2 standards, the same class of glass used in shower enclosures, car side windows and architectural balustrades.

Tempered glass is heat-treated to put the outer surfaces into compression, which makes it approximately four times stronger than ordinary annealed glass of the same thickness. When it does break under extreme force, it shatters into small blunt cubes rather than sharp daggers, which is why building codes mandate tempered glass in any vertical application at head height.

If a pane ever needs replacement, the aluminium frame unclips and a new pane drops in โ€” no body replacement, no welding, no powder-coat touch-up. Replacement glass for all four SG24 sizes is stocked at our Fujian facility.

Tempered Glass vs Solid Steel Door โ€” Side by Side

Buyers frequently ask whether the glass-front cabinet is worth the small price premium over a conventional solid-door cabinet. The honest answer depends on inspection frequency, environment, and appearance priorities. Here is a side-by-side:

Criterion SG24 Tempered Glass Front Conventional Solid Steel Door
Monthly visual inspection 10 seconds, walk-by, no tools Open door with key, inspect, reclose
Appearance in corridors Architectural, shows contents Utilitarian red box, contents hidden
Tamper detection Obvious โ€” broken or missing glass visible Requires opening door to verify
Vandalism resistance Tempered, ~4ร— annealed but can be broken Steel door, higher impact resistance
Cost of damaged front Replace glass pane only Replace full door or live with dents
Weight (1000 mm model) Lighter โ€” easier to wall-mount Heavier solid door
Outdoor / harsh environments Not recommended โ€” see stainless variant Acceptable with weatherproof coat
Unit price vs conventional Small premium (5โ€“15%) Lowest cost baseline

For harsh outdoor or marine environments, the stainless steel fire hose cabinet is a better choice than tempered glass. For clean flush-mount architectural installations, combine glass with our recessed fire hose cabinet variant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use tempered glass on a fire hose cabinet instead of a solid steel door?

The glass front exists for one reason: visual inspection. NFPA 25 and most local fire codes require fire hose stations to be inspected monthly. With a solid-door cabinet, each inspection means finding the key, opening the door, checking hose, valve, nozzle and tamper seal, then closing and relocking. With a tempered glass front, a facility manager walks past and sees everything in ten seconds. Across a building with 40โ€“100 cabinets, this saves hours every month. The glass is tempered safety glass (4ร— stronger than ordinary glass) so it is appropriate for corridor use.

What thickness of glass is used, and what standard does it meet?

Standard SG24 cabinets use 5 mm tempered safety glass manufactured to EN 12150 and GB 15763.2. This is the same class of safety glass used in shower enclosures, automotive side windows and architectural balustrades. The tempering process puts the glass surface into compression, making it approximately four times stronger than annealed glass of the same thickness. When it does fail under extreme impact, it breaks into small blunt fragments rather than sharp shards. Thicker 6 mm or 8 mm glass is available for high-traffic or vandalism-prone installations.

What if the glass gets broken? Is glass replacement available?

Yes, the glass is designed to be replaceable as a single component without replacing the cabinet body. The aluminium frame unclips, the damaged pane is removed, and a new pane drops in. Replacement glass panes for all four SG24 standard sizes (SG24A65-J, SG24B65Z-J, SG24D65-P, SG24E65Z-J) are stocked at our Fujian facility and ship on short lead time. Order glass only by emailing [email protected] with the model number. Custom-size replacement glass is cut to order.

What standard sizes are available in the SG24 tempered glass series?

Four standard sizes cover the most common hose station classes: SG24A65-J at 800ร—650ร—240 mm for Class II occupant-use stations in offices and small retail; SG24B65Z-J at 1000ร—700ร—240 mm for hotels and mid-size commercial; SG24D65-P at 1600ร—700ร—240 mm for Class I and III fire-department stations in malls and office towers; and SG24E65Z-J at 1800ร—700ร—240 mm for high-rise and industrial combined stations. Custom sizes outside this range are available with a small minimum order quantity. See the dimensions guide for class-by-class size selection.

Can the cabinet be installed flush (recessed) with the wall?

Yes. The SG24 cabinet is available in three mounting configurations: surface mount (default, sits on the finished wall), semi-recessed (partly inside the wall cavity), and fully recessed (entirely inside the wall cavity with only the glass and trim ring visible). Fully recessed installation meets ADA accessible-route rules because it limits corridor projection to less than 4 inches. Recessed versions require wall framing to be coordinated during design โ€” see our dedicated recessed fire hose cabinet product page for details.

Is the glass panel safe if broken?

Yes โ€” safety is the whole point of using tempered glass. Tempered glass is classified as a safety glazing material precisely because its failure mode is designed to prevent injury. When it breaks under extreme force, the compressive surface layer releases stored energy and the pane disintegrates into thousands of small blunt fragments, each approximately 5โ€“10 mm in size, with no sharp edges. This is in contrast to ordinary annealed glass, which breaks into large sharp shards. Tempered safety glass is the same material mandated by building codes for shower enclosures, low-level windows and guardrail infill panels.

Does the SG24 cabinet come with the hose, valve and extinguisher installed?

By default the cabinet ships empty so you can fit equipment that matches local specifications, valve threads (BSP / NPT / groove) and hose certifications for your market. As an option, we can supply the cabinet fully equipped with a Class II hose station kit assembled at our Fujian factory โ€” angle valve, lined hose, rack, nozzle, and optional portable extinguisher. Please specify requirements at quotation time so we can confirm thread standard, hose length and extinguisher type.
