Alarm Valve Tyco AV-1 vs Viking J-1 vs Victaulic 751 vs CA-FIRE ZSFZ — Full Comparison
Engineers specifying alarm valves for BRI, EPC, and ASEAN-region projects frequently evaluate Tyco AV-1, Viking Model J-1, and Victaulic Series 751 alongside Chinese-manufactured alternatives. This guide compares all four on the parameters that matter for international project specification.
What Are These Four Alarm Valves?
All four products are wet-pipe alarm check valves — flanged or grooved clapper valves installed at the base of a fire sprinkler riser to hold the system under pressure, open on sprinkler activation, and deliver hydraulic and electrical alarm signals. They share the same fundamental operating principle and perform the same code-required functions under NFPA 13.

Alarm Valve Tyco AV-1 — Overview & CA-FIRE Equivalent
The Tyco AV-1 (now branded Johnson Controls / Tyco) is one of the most widely specified flanged wet alarm valves in the world. It is a cast iron flanged clapper valve available in 2″–8″ (approximately DN50–DN200) with ANSI B16.5 flange drilling, UL Listed and FM Approved. The AV-1-300 is the grooved coupling variant.
The alarm valve Tyco AV-1 and CA-FIRE ZSFZ are functionally equivalent — both are single-clapper wet alarm check valves with the same trim assembly architecture (retard chamber, water motor gong, alarm pressure switch, gauges, drain). The key differences for export project specification are:
- UL Listing and FM Approval — required on US-standard contracts
- Wider global distributor network for spare parts
- Brand recognition on projects with named-product specifications
- Larger size range: DN65–DN300 vs Tyco’s 2″–8″ (DN50–DN200)
- SS304/SS316 body as standard catalogue item (not special order)
- Ex-certified variant (ZSFZ-Ex) for offshore and hazardous areas
- 3–5 week factory-direct lead time vs 8–16 weeks via distributor
- Factory-direct pricing — no distributor margin on BRI/EPC projects
CA-FIRE ZSFZ holds Chinese national type approval under GB 5135.6 — the Chinese national equivalent of UL 193. For projects specifying NFPA 13 compliance without a contractual UL/FM listing requirement (the majority of BRI, EPC, and ASEAN-region projects), GB 5135.6 certification is accepted. For projects with a mandatory UL or FM listing clause, contact sales@ca-fire.com to discuss certification options.
Viking Model J-1 Alarm Valve — Overview & CA-FIRE Equivalent
The Viking Model J-1 (Viking Group, now part of Rapidrop/Central / VFS Group) is the other major Western flanged wet alarm valve — a cast iron flanged clapper valve in 2″–8″ with ANSI B16.5 flanges, UL Listed and FM Approved. The Viking alarm valve range also includes the Model F-1 (grooved) and several dry-pipe and pre-action variants.
The alarm check valve Viking J-1 and CA-FIRE ZSFZ are direct functional equivalents. Both use the same clapper-type alarm check valve architecture. The specification differences are essentially the same as with the Tyco AV-1: Viking J-1 has UL/FM listings; CA-FIRE ZSFZ has a larger size range, standard SS body option, Ex certification, and factory-direct pricing.
For hydraulic calculations, CA-FIRE provides Cv values per DN size for use in NFPA 13 hydraulic analysis — directly equivalent to the Cv data published by Viking for the J-1 series. Contact CA-FIRE with your project DN size and hydraulic design flow for a complete Cv data submittal.
Victaulic Series 751 Alarm Valve — Overview & CA-FIRE Equivalent
The Victaulic 751 alarm valve (Victaulic Company) is a grooved-end wet alarm valve in DN80–DN200, using Victaulic’s IPS groove coupling system — the industry-standard grooved pipe connection. It is UL Listed and FM Approved, and is the dominant grooved alarm valve specification on projects where grooved pipework is used throughout.
The key difference from flanged alarm valves is the connection type — the Victaulic 751 uses mechanical groove couplings (2-bolt assembly) rather than bolted flanges. CA-FIRE’s direct equivalent for grooved systems is the ZSFZ-G grooved alarm valve — a Victaulic-compatible IPS groove alarm valve in DN100–DN250. The ZSFZ-G uses the same IPS roll-groove profile as the Victaulic 751 and accepts Victaulic Style 77/107 and all equivalent IPS-standard couplings directly, without adaptor fittings.
| Parameter | CA-FIRE ZSFZ-G | Victaulic Series 751 |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | IPS groove × groove (Victaulic-compatible) | IPS groove × groove |
| Sizes | ✓ DN100 · DN150 · DN200 · DN250 | DN80–DN200 |
| Coupling compatibility | ✓ Victaulic / Grinnell / Tyco / any IPS brand | Victaulic proprietary preferred |

When to Specify CA-FIRE vs Western Brands — Decision Guide
- Project is in China, ASEAN, Middle East, Africa, or South Asia — GB 5135.6 accepted
- BRI or EPC contract specifying NFPA 13 compliance without mandatory UL/FM listing
- Large DN sizes required — DN250 or DN300 (beyond Tyco/Viking 8″ maximum)
- Stainless steel SS316 body needed as catalogue item (not special order)
- Offshore or Zone 1/2 Ex certification required with SS body
- Short lead time is critical — 3–5 weeks vs 8–16 weeks
- Factory-direct pricing required — no distributor margin in project budget
- Contract specifically requires UL Listing or FM Approval by name
- US domestic project with AHJ requiring UL-listed components
- Project specification names Tyco/Viking/Victaulic as the only acceptable manufacturers
- Owner requires global spare parts availability from local distributors in remote locations
What “Functional Equivalent” Actually Means for Project Submittals
When CA-FIRE describes the ZSFZ as a “functional equivalent” to the Tyco AV-1 or Viking J-1, this has a specific technical meaning — not a marketing claim. The equivalence covers:
What functional equivalence does not mean: it does not mean the CA-FIRE valve carries a UL Listing number or FM Approval certificate. These are specific third-party certifications issued by Underwriters Laboratories and FM Global respectively. GB 5135.6 type approval and UL 193 listing are parallel standards — both technically robust, but not interchangeable on contracts that specifically require one or the other.
