Product Overview

ZSXDF Series —
Ex-Certified Fire Isolation

Designed for petrochemical, offshore, and hazardous-area fire suppression installations where standard valves cannot be used.

The CA-FIRE explosion proof butterfly valve (ZSXDF7 / ZSXDF8) is a certified fire protection isolation valve for fire suppression systems operating in Zone 1/2 flammable gas and Zone 21/22 combustible dust classified areas. It integrates a butterfly disc valve body with a supervisory tamper switch inside an IEC 60079-1 flameproof enclosure — delivering real-time valve position monitoring to the fire alarm control panel.

Available in two connection types — wafer (ZSXDF7) installed between pipe flanges, and grooved Victaulic-compatible (ZSXDF8) for mechanical coupling systems. Both share identical Ex db IIC T6 Gb / Ex tb IIIC T80°C Db dual certification, 1.6 MPa working pressure, and DC24V tamper switch output.

Note: This page covers explosion-proof signal butterfly valves for hazardous area use. For standard non-Ex fire butterfly valves, see the Gear Operated Butterfly Valve or Grooved Butterfly Valve pages.

What Sets the ZSXDF Apart

Dual Ex Certification

Ex db IIC T6 Gb + Ex tb IIIC T80°C Db

Dual gas and dust explosion-proof certification. IIC covers the most demanding gas group including hydrogen and acetylene. Suitable for Zone 1/2 and Zone 21/22 classified areas — LNG, petrochemical, offshore, paint facilities.

Weatherproof IP66

IP66 Outdoor Rating

Complete dust-tight and powerful water jet protection. Suitable for outdoor petrochemical plants, offshore topsides, coastal tank farms, and installations exposed to tropical rain, hose-down, and salt spray.

NFPA 72 Compliant

Integrated Tamper Switch

DC24V 0.5A supervisory switch monitors valve position in real time. Outputs "OPEN", "TAMPER", and "CLOSED" signals directly to the FACP — satisfying NFPA 72 Chapter 17 supervisory signal requirements without additional components.

Two Connection Types

Wafer (ZSXDF7) + Grooved (ZSXDF8)

Both models share identical Ex certification, pressure rating, and signal output. ZSXDF7 installs between flanges (ANSI 150, DIN PN16, GB PN16). ZSXDF8 uses Victaulic-compatible grooved couplings for faster installation in modular fire systems.

Material Options

SS316 or GGG40 Body

Stainless steel SS316 recommended for foam concentrate, offshore seawater, and corrosive environments. Cast iron GGG40 for standard onshore fresh-water systems. Both carry the same Ex db IIC T6 Gb certification and 1.6 MPa pressure rating.

Foam Compatible

AFFF / AR-AFFF / Protein Foam

Rated for water and all major foam-water mixture types at full system operating pressure. EPDM seat resists foam concentrate degradation. Used extensively on tank farm and offshore platform foam suppression headers.

Operating Principle

How the ZSXDF Explosion Proof Valve Works

Five-stage working principle — from normal supervision to hazardous atmosphere protection.

1

Normal Open Position — Tamper Supervision

Disc sits parallel to the bore. Minimal flow resistance. The supervisory switch outputs a continuous DC24V "OPEN" signal to the FACP, confirming the water supply path is unobstructed in real time.

2

Tamper Detection — Partial Movement

If the disc rotates — even slightly — the switch changes state after 1–2 turns and transmits a "TAMPER" supervisory alarm to the FACP per NFPA 72 Chapter 17. Impaired water supply is flagged before any fire event occurs.

3

Emergency Closure — Full Isolation

The worm gear or lever rotates the disc 90° to the fully closed position. The switch outputs a "CLOSED" signal and the FACP logs the valve status change. Seal test pressure is 3.2 MPa — zero leakage at working pressure.

4

Hazardous Atmosphere Protection

The IEC 60079-1 flameproof "db" housing contains any internal arc entirely within the enclosure. Surface temperatures do not exceed T6 class (85°C) — well below the ignition temperature of IIC group hydrogen (500°C AIT). Dust "tb" enclosure limits surface temperature to T80°C.

5

Signal Wiring — FACP Integration

The tamper switch connects to the FACP via a 2-wire supervised circuit through the Ex-rated M20×1.5 cable entry. DC24V 0.5A rating is compatible with Siemens, Notifier, Hochiki, EST, and all major fire alarm panel brands.

When You Need This Valve

Specify the ZSXDF series when any part of the fire suppression system passes through a hazardous classified area — Zone 1/2 gas or Zone 21/22 dust. If your project does not involve classified zones, the standard non-Ex signal butterfly valve offers the same tamper switch supervision at lower cost.

Selection Guide

Wafer or Grooved — Which to Choose?

Both models deliver identical explosion-proof performance. Connection type is the only selection criterion.

ZSXDF7

Wafer Type
Explosion Proof BFV

  • Installed between pipe flanges — ANSI 150, DIN PN16, or GB PN16
  • Shorter face-to-face length (45–80 mm vs 80–165 mm for grooved)
  • Lower hardware cost — requires only flange through-bolts
  • Specify when project calls for "wafer butterfly valve, between flanges"
  • Ideal where face-to-face envelope is tight

Best for: Flanged pipe systems, onshore fire mains, petrochemical process areas

ZSXDF8

Grooved Type
Explosion Proof BFV

  • Victaulic-compatible grooved mechanical couplings — no flange bolt circle
  • Up to 40% faster field installation vs flanged joints
  • Allows angular pipe deflection — better on platforms subject to movement
  • Easy disassembly for maintenance — no hot work required
  • Standard in offshore platform fire mains and modular suppression skids

Best for: Grooved pipe systems, offshore platforms, modular foam suppression skids

Frequently Asked Questions

Technical Questions Answered

What is an explosion proof butterfly valve?
An explosion proof butterfly valve is a butterfly disc valve with a supervisory tamper switch housed inside an IEC 60079-1 certified flameproof ("db") enclosure. The housing prevents any internal electrical arc from igniting the surrounding explosive atmosphere. In fire suppression applications, the integrated tamper switch monitors valve position and transmits open/closed/tamper signals to the fire alarm control panel. The ZSXDF series holds Ex db IIC T6 Gb (gas) and Ex tb IIIC T80°C Db (dust) dual certification — the most stringent classification available, covering IIC gas group environments including hydrogen and acetylene.
What does the tamper switch do and why is it required?
The tamper switch (supervisory switch) monitors the open/closed status of the fire water supply valve in real time. In the fully open position, it sends a continuous "OPEN" signal to the FACP. If the disc is moved — even partially — the switch changes state within 1–2 turns and transmits a "TAMPER" supervisory alarm. This is required by NFPA 72 Chapter 17 and NFPA 13 Section 8.16 for all electrically supervised water supply control valves. Without tamper supervision, a partially-closed valve could reduce sprinkler system flow below design density during a fire — without triggering any alarm.
What is the difference between ZSXDF7 and ZSXDF8?
ZSXDF7 is the wafer type (对夹式防爆信号蝶阀) — installs between standard pipe flanges (ANSI 150, DIN PN16, GB PN16). ZSXDF8 is the grooved type (沟槽式防爆信号蝶阀) — uses Victaulic-compatible grooved mechanical couplings. Both share identical Ex db IIC T6 Gb certification, 1.6 MPa working pressure, 6.4 MPa strength test, DC24V tamper switch output, and DN50–DN300 size range. The only selection criterion is the pipe connection standard on your project.
Stainless steel SS316 or cast iron GGG40 — which body to specify?
Cast iron GGG40 (ductile iron) is sufficient for most onshore fire suppression systems using fresh water or standard AFFF foam. Specify stainless steel SS316 when: (1) the suppression agent is foam concentrate, seawater, or brackish water; (2) the installation is offshore, coastal, or in high-humidity tropical environments; (3) the project specification requires stainless steel per API 6D, NORSOK S-001, or similar standards. Both materials carry the same Ex db IIC T6 Gb certification and 1.6 MPa pressure rating.
Does this valve comply with NFPA 13?
Yes. NFPA 13 Section 8.16 requires water supply control valves to be supervised. The ZSXDF tamper switch satisfies the electrical supervision requirement. For projects subject to NFPA 30 (flammable liquids) or NFPA 409 (aircraft hangars), the IEC 60079 Ex db IIC rating meets the electrical classification requirements. The ZSXDF is manufactured and tested to GB 5135.13 with factory hydrostatic test certificate supplied with each unit.
What size explosion proof butterfly valve do I need?
Valve size is determined by the fire system hydraulic calculation, not the valve itself. Your fire protection engineer sizes the pipe and valve based on required flow rate, system pressure, and hazard density per NFPA 13 or equivalent. As a reference: most sprinkler system risers use DN100–DN150; tank farm foam headers typically use DN150–DN300. The ZSXDF series covers DN50 (2″) through DN300 (12″) — the full range used in commercial and industrial fire suppression.
Is the ZSXDF ATEX certified? Can it be used in EU hazardous area projects?
The ZSXDF holds Chinese NEPSI Ex certification under GB 3836, which is harmonised with IEC 60079 — the same international standard that underpins both ATEX (EU) and IECEx (international) certification schemes. The marking Ex db IIC T6 Gb + Ex tb IIIC T80°C Db maps directly to ATEX Category 2G (Group IIC, Temperature Class T6) and ATEX Category 2D. For EU projects requiring formal ATEX marking (CE + ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU), or for projects in Australia, the Middle East, or other IECEx-adopting jurisdictions, please contact CA-FIRE to discuss third-party IECEx verification or equivalent compliance documentation for your AHJ submission.
What types of hazardous area is the ZSXDF rated for?
The ZSXDF is rated for Zone 1 and Zone 2 flammable gas/vapour atmospheres (Ex db IIC T6 Gb) and Zone 21 and Zone 22 combustible dust atmospheres (Ex tb IIIC T80°C Db). Gas Group IIC is the most demanding flammable gas category — covering hydrogen and acetylene — meaning the valve is automatically suitable for less demanding Group IIA (propane, methane) and IIB (ethylene) zones. This covers the full range of petrochemical, refinery, offshore, paint finishing, grain, pharmaceutical, and mining hazardous area classifications.
