The Foundation of Every Fixed Monitor Installation — Self-Draining, Anti-Collision, Pressure-Regulating

Models: PZ100-1.6 · PZ150-1.6 · PZ100-1.6C · PZ150-1.6C · PZ100-1.6D · PZ150-1.6D

The CA-FIRE PZ Series is the flanged pipe base that connects the water supply main to the PS or PL Series fire monitor above. It provides a stable structural mounting point on the pipe riser, the rotating bearing joint that allows the monitor to rotate 360° horizontally, and — depending on the variant — automatic self-draining, anti-collision protection, pressure regulation, and multi-function hose brigade connection.

Three variants cover the full range of installation requirements: the standard self-draining base for general outdoor fixed installations, the gear-driven anti-collision pressure-regulating base for exposed or high-risk locations, and the multi-function base for sites that also require a fire brigade hose connection at the same riser point. All variants accept DN100 or DN150 flanged inlets and are rated to PN1.6 MPa for water and foam-water mixed media.

Self-Draining Monitor Base
PZ100-1.6  |  PZ150-1.6
The standard PZ base for the majority of fixed outdoor monitor installations. Provides the flanged pipe connection, 360° rotating monitor mount, and automatic self-draining via a live-piston drain valve. When the monitor shuts off and pressure drops, the drain valve opens automatically to expel residual water from the base body, preventing water retention and freeze damage in cold climates.

Multi-Function Monitor Base
PZ100-1.6D  |  PZ150-1.6D
The multi-function base adds two KWS65 fire brigade hose outlets (M125×6 inlet) alongside the monitor connection, allowing the same riser point to supply both the fixed monitor above and fire brigade hose lines from below simultaneously. Ideal for sites where fire brigade access is part of the emergency plan and the monitor riser doubles as a fire hydrant connection point. Custom pressure regulation, anti-collision and foam-concentrate injection options available on request.

Key Design Features

💧
Automatic Self-Draining
The live-piston self-drain valve seals automatically under supply pressure during operation. When the monitor shuts off and system pressure drops, a spring opens the drain port, expelling residual water from the base body and lower monitor. Essential in frost-risk environments — prevents freeze damage that would crack the base body or rupture the connected pipework.
🔄
360° Rotating Monitor Joint
The base top outlet incorporates a precision rotating bearing joint that allows the mounted monitor to rotate a full 360° horizontally without any rotary union in the supply pipework below. The supply pipe connects as a fixed flanged joint — all rotation occurs at the base-to-monitor interface above ground.
🛡️
Anti-Collision Protection (C variant)
The gear-driven C variant incorporates a mechanical anti-collision mechanism that allows the above-ground stem and monitor to deflect and absorb impact energy from vehicle strikes without fracturing the flanged pipe connection below ground. After an impact, the base can be manually reset to the upright position without replacing the base body or disturbing the buried pipework.
Pressure Regulation (C variant)
The C variant includes an integrated pressure-regulating valve that limits downstream pressure to protect the monitor body and nozzle from pressure surges in the supply main. Particularly important in systems with variable supply pressure or where high pump discharge pressures may be transmitted to monitors during fire pump commissioning or pump switching.
🔗
Dual Hose Outlets (D variant)
The multi-function D variant adds two KWS65 hose outlets at the base body level, supplied via an M125×6 inlet. This allows a fire brigade to connect attack hose lines to the same riser that supplies the fixed monitor above — eliminating the need for a separate hydrant at the same position and reducing installation cost.
📐
Adjustable Installation Height
The above-ground stem height of the PZ base is adjustable and supplied to the specified project dimension. This allows the monitor outlet height to be set at the correct elevation for the installed monitor type, the surrounding ground level and any local regulations specifying minimum monitor height above finished floor level.

Typical Installation Scenarios

🏭
Industrial Plant Fixed Monitors
The standard PZ100/150-1.6 base is the most common specification for fixed monitor installations at petrochemical plants, refineries and industrial facilities. Bases are installed on dedicated fire water mains with the monitor mounted at the project-specified height above finished grade.
🛣️
Roadside & Exposed Locations
The gear-driven C variant is specified wherever vehicle traffic passes close to monitor bases — loading bays, tank farm roads, port quaysides and perimeter access roads. The anti-collision mechanism protects the buried pipework from damage in the event of a vehicle strike on the monitor stem.
Tank Farms & Bund Areas
Monitor bases in bund areas around flammable liquid storage tanks are exposed to spilled liquids, overpressure events and heat from pool fires. The self-draining function prevents water accumulation inside the base body that could freeze and fracture in cold weather or trap contaminants in warm climates.
🚒
Fire Brigade Access Points
The multi-function D variant base allows fixed monitor positions to double as fire brigade hose connection points. This is commonly specified at facilities where the fire brigade is part of the emergency response plan but the site cannot accommodate separate hydrants at all monitor positions due to space or cost constraints.
🌡️
Cold Climate Installations
In cold climates where temperatures fall below freezing, the automatic self-draining function is essential — it prevents the residual water that remains in a shut-off monitor and base from freezing and splitting the base body or monitor inlet casting. All PZ variants include this function as standard.
🏗️
Warehouse & Logistics Facilities
Fixed monitors at warehouses and distribution centres are mounted on PZ bases at regular intervals along the building perimeter and at internal aisle positions. The standard base is the typical specification, with the DN150 inlet used for PS10/80W positions at main attack monitor locations covering wide warehouse bay spans.

Frequently Asked Questions — PZ Series Fire Monitor Base

A fire monitor base (also called a fire monitor pipe base or monitor riser base) is a flanged pipe fitting installed between the underground water supply main and the fire monitor above ground. It serves as the structural mounting point for the monitor, provides the rotating bearing joint that allows 360° horizontal rotation, and incorporates additional functions — self-draining, anti-collision protection and pressure regulation — depending on the variant selected.
The standard PZ-1.6 is a self-draining base for general fixed installations. The gear-driven PZ-1.6C adds anti-collision protection (the stem deflects on impact without breaking the buried pipe connection) and an integrated pressure-regulating valve — recommended for roadside, quayside and exposed locations where impact damage is a risk. The multi-function PZ-1.6D adds two KWS65 hose brigade outlets at base level via an M125×6 inlet, allowing the same riser to supply both the fixed monitor and fire brigade attack hose lines simultaneously.
The PZ base uses a live-piston self-drain valve. During normal operation, water pressure holds the piston against the drain port, sealing it closed. When the monitor shuts off and system pressure drops below the spring force, the piston retracts and the drain port opens, allowing residual water to drain out of the base body and lower monitor cavity. This prevents water retention that would freeze and damage the base in cold weather, or harbour stagnant water in warm climates.
The PZ Series base is compatible with all CA-FIRE PS and PL Series monitors — PS Handle, PS Turbine-Worm, PL Handle, PL Turbine-Worm and RCFM Remote Control monitors. All share the same DN100 monitor outlet interface at the top of the base. This means any monitor type can be swapped onto the same base without modifying the pipework — a PS Handle monitor can be replaced with a PS Turbine-Worm, or a PS water monitor replaced with a PL foam-water monitor, on the same base.
The inlet size is matched to the supply main pipe diameter and the design flow rate. DN100 is suitable for most PS8 and PS10/50W–PS10/60W positions (up to ~60 L/s). DN150 is specified for PS10/80W (80 L/s) and PL10/64 (64 L/s) high-flow positions where the larger bore reduces friction loss through the base at maximum flow. If the supply main is DN150, specify the DN150 inlet regardless of the monitor model to avoid creating an unnecessary restriction at the base inlet.
Yes. All PZ Series variants are rated for water and foam-water mixed media. The base body, seals and internal components are compatible with standard foam concentrate solutions — AFFF, FFFP and protein foam at normal proportioning rates of 1–6%. This makes the PZ base suitable for use with PL Series foam-water monitors in petrochemical, tank farm and aviation fuel fire protection applications.
