Key Features

🌡️ −40°C Frost Resistance — Auto-Drain Design

Russia’s extreme winters demand more than standard hydrant construction. The Russian standard fire hydrant‘s frost-proof valve core and automatic drain system expel all residual water from the barrel and outlets after each use — with no manual draining required. This eliminates the primary cause of cold-weather hydrant failure: ice expansion cracking the valve body.

The ductile iron body’s thick-wall design provides additional thermal mass, slowing temperature drop in sub-zero conditions. For installations in regions below −30°C, an optional polyurethane foam insulation jacket is available.

🏗️ Ductile Iron Body — 20+ Year Service Life

The hydrant body is cast from ductile iron EN-GJS-450-10 — a material that combines the corrosion resistance of grey iron with the impact toughness of steel. In industrial and municipal installations exposed to vehicle impact, heavy machinery and harsh weathering, ductile iron maintains structural integrity where grey iron fractures.

Double surface protection — hot-dip galvanising (Zn ≥ 90 μm) underneath electrostatic powder coating — provides two independent corrosion barriers, extending exterior service life even in chemically aggressive industrial environments.

🔧 GOST-Compatible Outlets — Direct Hose Connection

Both outlet ports — the 100 mm main outlet and the 65 mm auxiliary outlet — are machined to GOST standard thread profiles, ensuring direct compatibility with Russian fire service hose couplings and fittings without adaptors. The brass alloy (Cu-Zn 40) valve core and EPDM sealing rings provide leak-free shut-off across the full −40°C to +80°C service temperature range.

The flange inlet is dimensioned to GOST PN10/PN16 standards, enabling direct bolt-up to Russian standard water main pipework during installation — no adaptor flanges or special fittings required.

How the Russian Standard Fire Hydrant Works

The Russian standard above-ground fire hydrant uses a direct-lift valve mechanism operated by a top-mounted wrench port. The auto-drain system is passive — no powered components, no manual steps.

1

Standby — Barrel dry, auto-drain open

In standby, the main valve is closed and the drain port at the base of the barrel is open to atmosphere. Any residual water or condensation drains out through the drain port — the barrel above the valve is dry. Ice cannot form and crack the body.

2

Activation — Open valve, drain closes automatically

Insert the operating wrench into the top port and rotate clockwise. As the main valve lifts open, the mechanical linkage simultaneously closes the drain port. Water flows from the main under pressure up through the barrel to the outlets. No power, no electronics — fully mechanical.

3

Discharge — 100 mm main or 65 mm auxiliary outlet

Connect the fire hose to the appropriate outlet — 100 mm for high-flow large-diameter hose (maximum 90 L/s); 65 mm for standard fire service hose. Both outlets use GOST-standard thread profiles for direct coupling to Russian fire service equipment.

4

Shutdown — Drain reopens, barrel self-empties

Rotate the wrench anti-clockwise to close the main valve. The drain port reopens simultaneously and gravity-drains all residual water from the barrel through the drain hole at the base — leaving the barrel dry within minutes. No manual draining required in sub-zero conditions.

Installation Guide

Pre-Installation Checklist

Before installing the Russian standard fire hydrant, verify the following: the product model and GOST certification match the project specification; the hydrant shows no transport damage (check body, outlets and flange face); all standard accessories are present; the base is flat, stable and has sufficient bearing capacity (≥ 250 kg); clearance of at least 2 metres exists around the hydrant for fire tender access; the water supply pipeline is rated for 1.0 MPa working pressure and the flange face has been cleaned of rust and debris.

Installation Steps

Place the hydrant on the prepared concrete base and use a level gauge to confirm verticality (tolerance ≤ 3 mm/m). Install the EPDM flange gasket between the hydrant inlet flange and the water main flange, align all bolt holes, insert fixing bolts and tighten in a crisscross pattern to 50–60 N·m torque — even clamping force ensures a leak-free seal. Fix the hydrant to the base with M18 × 120 mm expansion bolts. Test the drain valve by hand to confirm free movement. Conduct a hydrostatic test: cap both outlets, connect the test line, pressurise slowly to 1.5 MPa and hold for 30 minutes — inspect the flange joint, valve core, drain valve and outlets for any leakage. Install reflective markers or insulation jacket if specified.

Emergency Operation

Remove the outlet cap(s) by rotating anti-clockwise. Connect fire hose to the required outlet and tighten. Insert the operating wrench into the top port and rotate clockwise to open — water flows immediately. Adjust valve opening to control flow rate. After suppression: close the valve by rotating anti-clockwise, disconnect hoses, replace outlet caps. The drain system will self-empty the barrel automatically — verify drain is functioning freely before leaving the hydrant in cold conditions.

Maintenance Schedule

Frequency Task
Monthly Inspect body, outlets and surface coating for corrosion, mechanical damage or paint loss. Confirm outlet caps are secure and undamaged. Verify drain valve moves freely. Clear any obstacles (vehicles, debris, vegetation) within the 2 m access zone. Confirm the hydrant is visible and unobstructed.
Quarterly Remove outlet caps and inspect EPDM sealing rings — replace with CA-FIRE genuine parts if cracked or deformed. Apply lubricating oil to the valve core operating port. Clean the drain valve port to remove sediment. Check flange bolts for loosening and re-torque if necessary.
Annual Conduct a full hydrostatic test (1.5 MPa, 30 minutes). Inspect the drain valve mechanism for wear. Repaint any areas where coating has failed. Check the insulation jacket for damage if installed. Verify GOST certification and maintenance log are up to date. Document all findings.
Before winter Confirm auto-drain is fully functional — operate the hydrant with no hose attached and verify water drains completely within 3 minutes of closing. Install thermal insulation jacket if region forecast is below −30°C. Mark hydrant position with snow poles if the hydrant may be obscured by snow accumulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does GOST 24013-80 specify for above-ground fire hydrants?

GOST 24013-80 is the Russian national standard governing outdoor above-ground fire hydrants. It specifies minimum working pressure (1.0 MPa), hydrostatic test pressure (1.5 MPa for 30 minutes), flow rate performance, flange and outlet thread dimensions, frost resistance requirements (operability to −40°C), body material grades, surface treatment requirements and marking. All CA-FIRE Russian standard fire hydrants are tested against every parameter in GOST 24013-80 by accredited third-party laboratories and supplied with the test certification documentation.

How does the auto-drain system prevent freezing in Russian winters?

The auto-drain is a mechanically linked drain port at the base of the hydrant barrel, positioned below the main valve seat. When the main valve is closed, the drain port opens automatically via a linked valve mechanism, allowing residual water in the barrel above the valve to drain out by gravity through the base drain. The barrel is left dry — no standing water is present to freeze and expand. The system requires no manual operation and no electrical power. After closing the hydrant, the barrel self-empties completely within 2–3 minutes under normal conditions. For extreme cold (below −30°C), the optional insulation jacket is recommended as an additional measure.

Is the Russian standard fire hydrant compatible with other GOST-market countries?

Yes. GOST standards are adopted — in identical or slightly adapted form — by most CIS member states including Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and Ukraine. The GOST 24013-80 flange dimensions (PN10/PN16), outlet thread profiles and hydrant height are standard across these markets. CA-FIRE supplies to fire protection contractors and municipal engineering bureaus throughout the CIS region; GOST certification documentation issued with each order satisfies local authority inspection requirements in all of these markets.

What surface colour options are available?

The standard colour is RAL 3000 red — the colour specified in GOST 24013-80 for above-ground fire hydrants in Russia. Alternative colours available on request include RAL 5010 blue (used in some CIS municipalities), RAL 7035 grey (industrial and low-visibility preference) and custom RAL colours to project specification. All colours are applied as electrostatic powder coating over hot-dip galvanised substrate — the galvanising layer remains intact regardless of the top coat colour choice.

What is the difference between the Russian standard and BS750 / French type fire hydrants?

The three types use different outlet thread profiles, flange dimensions and overall height dimensions specified by their respective national standards — they are not interchangeable. Russian GOST 24013-80 uses metric thread profiles on both outlets and GOST PN10/PN16 flanges. BS750 (UK standard) uses 2½″ instantaneous coupling connectors. French NF type uses a 100 mm single outlet with French standard coupling. Always confirm which standard applies to your project authority jurisdiction before specifying — selecting the wrong standard type results in incompatibility with local fire service hose connections.
